Stories build communities, and become part of their legacy through the ages. Stories come in different forms, and different are the ways we enjoy and share them. The Spinning Wheel Film Festival celebrates the stories of Sikhs worldwide, and brings diverse interpretations of their traditions and their 500 year history to the screen. In earlier times, as villagers gathered around a spinning wheel - the charkha - to spin and weave, it also became a focal point where they shared their joys, their sorrows and their stories. So too is the Spinning Wheel Film Festival a gathering place for filmmakers and their audience to explore the life experiences of Sikhs in the global village.

Debuting in Toronto in 2003, the Spinning Wheel Film Festival has since spread to other cities across North America such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and now Miami.
The medium of film is a powerful one and with this we hope to spotlight various scenes past and present representative of our heritage. This year’s theme “Sikh Identity: Celebrating Our Heritage” will be showcasing a series of 12 short films with various themes: entertaining, educating, heart wrenching, historical, thought provoking and inspirational films on Sikh Identity. Thereby providing a forum for the Sikh and non-Sikh community to preview Sikh films, meet filmmakers, and pave the way for discussion.

Divided We Fall

In the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, a college student drives across the country with her video camera, capturing stories of hate crimes and violence in Sikh, Muslim, and Arab American communities. Stories of fear and unspeakable loss. But also resilience and hope. Four years later, she retraces her journey to find out how much has changed, and how much has stayed the same. Interweaving analysis from leading scholars, lawyers, and legislators, the film offers a unique look into the nature of fear, discrimination and violence that divides Americans in times of war.
